Teaching Typography 1

'It's not How we teach Typography, its how we learn it'

Tying in with my dissertation on the 'De-valuation of typography' and my type workshop brief I have been researching the different methods in which typography is taught. This should give me a better contextual understanding of how to approach the lesson plan to allow the students enough freedom to experiment but introducing some basic rules.

I really like this idea of 'how we learn it' and this could be a nice basis to start developing my brief, maybe making the class more about how the students react to the grids and process of creating letterforms could be approached differently. Possibly just giving them grids in the first place and then doing a presentation and seeing how their process changes before and after ~ Again this could be documented through the publication.

  • I often say that one of the most frequent questions that I get asked by students is, “Why is learning typography so hard?” I jokingly respond, “Because it is hard. Get over it!” However, that is not all of the answer. What I don’t mention to students is that typography is difficult to learn because it’s difficult to teach well. Our current educational environments lack time, resources and qualified instructors to examine better solutions and alternatives.
This is just a section of the website, but it will a resource I will refer back to over the duration of the following weeks. ~ Source [Accessed on 24.01.13]
