Wim Crouwel A Graphic Odyssey

Designed by Spin about the work of the infamous Wim Crouwel ~ Published by Unit Editions

I was reading over this beautiful publication for some of my dissertation research about how the computer has devalued typography. It has some really interesting information about his use of grids and his general approach to typography! A great read and I would advise it to anyone interested in his work, or in the modernist period.

The publication is full of images featuring an array of Crouwel's work, with an interview between him and Tony Brook in the glossy middle pages. The glossy pages work really well to separate the interview from the image based book, using red text to seperate it from page numbers. The way the interview references different bits of information with markers to each page number in the same typeface used for the physical page numbers is beautiful through its simplicity. This is another aspect that I wanted to consider when working on the catalogue for Inoda & Sveje.

Can't forget to mention the beautiful red binding string used that becomes visible when the book is opened to its middle spread, again this works in beautiful harmony with the red type on the glossy middle pages.
