Mock Up Binding

I wanted to test out the binding method I mentioned in an earlier post. It works in a similar way to a perfect bind but rather than the cover being used to hold the document together the slot in the wood sample is filled with glue and the pages are inserted from here. Always good to take a trip down into wood work and get an idea of how the brand utilises the materials at their disposal.

When in woodwork I used the ban saw to get a strip of the end ready for the mock up. Then sanded it down to make sure the grain of the wood was as prominent as possible. The wood I used was 'Solid American Walnut' one that Inoda & Sveje utilise in many of their products. The dark wood contrasts well with the pristine white pages I am planning on using for the book. I still want to include wood samples in there somehow and it might be a slight overload using the wood on the spine too... something I will work out through design sheets.
The book was relatively hard to open but the spine works as a nice solid base for it to sit on. I would have to comprise some space on the inside margin to ease opening the publication. Also this is only A5 where as an A4 format would ease reading the publication.
