Publication Research Uno

Main Studio (Amsterdam) - A variety of Publications
-
After approaching the prospectus brief I have been researching different studios and their approaches to producing publications. Particularly looking at the layout and methods of dealing with content but also print specs and finishes. This first study is of Main Studio in Amsterdam, people I was in touch with over summer but never managed to visit. Inspirational work and a studio I would love to work with in the future. I will get back in touch to see if they will give me some feedback on my context publication.

Taken from a variety of projects all with different clients and needs...

This tipped in last section of the publication contrasts really well to the rest of the document and provides a space for text to sit. The rest consists mainly of full bleed images, leaving the type with little room, making the tip in a perfect solution.

Lovely typeface that communicates quality and value, something I will need to consider when creating the Inoda & Sveje publication.
This colour system is beautiful and might be a nice approach to apply to the prospectus. A similar approach is taken in NEU BAULT book and separates the book down and has the possibility of changing the pace and tone of the sections.

The typeface is also appropriate to the project, given the themes of architecture and construction its sharp forms reflect the modernist content of the book.
This spread is not something that would usually grab my attention (its not my usual geeky type layout) but the way the hairline type sits on top of the sculptural image is harmonious. The white sits well and doesn't over power the image but is simple and easy to read... a really well constructed layout.
I am really fond of this gate folded back section to this photographers portfolio. This was something we were considering for the yearbook but worked out another solution that may be slightly more in budget.
Everything about this is amazing, the open spine, the de-constructed type on the cover and white foiling of the text. It suggest quality and again modernism (a consistent theme from Main studio). The glitchy style patters are also reminiscent of architectural landscapes adding more context to the finish applied by the studio. Communicating similar aspects of design might be interesting for the yearbook or prospectus pitch.
This layout taken from the book above is a complete opposite from the previous spread, but the white space allows the text to be read easily and works harmoniously with the images. Another really great piece of work from the studio, I will try and get in touch with them and see if they are willing to answer a few design related questions for me!
